Have you ever considered that your personality might be a factor in whether you get a full time job or not, or even whether you get a part time job or not? Well I know I hadn’t, until a friend pointed out that we all have one of these ‘personalities’. So on realising this, I decided to go out in to that enormously large universe of information that is the world wide web, on a mission to find out my true self, the true inner me, my personality as one would call it. All this in the hope that I find out what I need to know about myself to make the big step up from student life and student part time jobs, to the scary, but exciting world of being a graduate and getting my first graduate job which hopefully would lead to a great full time job.

So there I was, browsing the internet on your usual searching websites, getting nowhere, until all of a sudden as if a switch had just been flicked, exactly what I was looking for appeared before my very eyes on the screen in front of me. Yes, the answers to all my pondering thoughts about personality affecting what type of jobs in Newcastle that I will get or will not get, all within a click away. As I took a deep breath and was preparing to learn about myself things that I may already know, things that may pleasantly surprise me, or things that I subconsciously already know are true, but don’t like to admit to myself.

As I stared down the barrel, or at my screen in real terms, questions began to appear on my screen that instantly made me think about myself and my prospects of full time jobs that I enjoy, because the last thing I want is a job like my part time jobs that I had while at University. Then once the final question was answered, I nervously waited for the dreaded news as my results loaded (talk about walking on egg shells)…

Sitting there in my old roughed up chair that had taken the hammerings of a conveyor belt of students in the past, possibly all going through the same frantic full time job searching on Newcastle full time job websites as me, it sudden dawned on me that even before the results, the excellent questions on this Bluezonjobs.com website had already answered a lot for me and taught me a few valuable lessons about my inner personality. Finally the most direct method of gaining information about is company is by visiting them and speaking with people who already work there. Most companies are not averse to providing potential employees with literature about their firm. Of course take care not to ruffle feathers or venture into any secure areas without authorization. This should be a friendly fact finding mission not a covert operation.

Finding a new job or changing jobs is difficult but there are some simple things you need to know which can make the whole experience a lot easier and smoother.

Generally, if you get to the stage where a potential employer wants to offer you a job you will have been through several interviews. You should know, then, whether the job is right for you and have a good idea about what to expect in terms of job responsibilities and salary expectations.  Some jobs require a huge amount of daily negotiation skills, such as sales jobs, however many do not and it is important to be well prepared when commencing this component of the process to apply for or change your job.

If you are offered the job during the interview, you should absolutely not accept the job on the spot. You can indicate the likelihood of accepting the job but you should wait for a written offer detailing your role, salary, benefits and other pertinent details, like the length of time before you get a pay review, etc. You need all the information to hand to make an informed decision and, since it is your career you are considering, the decision you are making is very important.  However, if an employer is convinced enough to offer you the job during the interview then they may very well be prepared to begin the offer negotiations there and then as well – who knows, you could walk out of your interview with a written offer!

In terms of salary negotiation you are obviously looking to build on what you earn in your current role. However, it would be foolish to overstate your case. The employer has a range that they can work within, allowing room for negotiation, and you should be aware of this salary range. Aiming for 10-15% above what you currently earn is reasonable, and exceptional candidates can aim even higher.  Once again, the more you can manage to find out, the better your chances of negotiating a higher salary.  Asking questions during the final interview stages about things such as salary is acceptable and likely expected.

When you receive your written offer, examine all the details carefully to ensure it includes all the details agreed upon. Check the working hours, salary details, bonus scheme, holiday entitlement and any other extras previously discussed. If you’re uncertain about anything, or find that any elements are missing, phone your new employer to rectify the situation.

Finally, you should not resign from your current job until you have a signed contract because if anything goes wrong you could be left in the lurch, and suddenly find yourself unemployed!
